Introduction to the CACFP

These lessons and materials provide an overview of participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).  There are versions of the lessons for both child care centers and family day care home providers.

The CACFP is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) that meets the needs of growing children in many ways. The CACFP supports early childhood nutrition through

  • meals and snacks based on component foods groups;
  • foods portions that meet growing children's needs;
  • materials that help children try new foods, learn about food and eating, enjoy physical activity, and develop mealtime skills; and
  • tools and skill building that help child care providers operate with good business practices.
